This past Saturday, the men’s and women’s cross country team traveled to Riverside to compete at the UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational. The race took place on UCR’s Agricultural Operations course, right by the school’s campus. The runners faced warm and dry weather with temperatures in the 80s.

The men ran in the 8k invitational race and competed against 25 other teams consisting of NCAA and NAIA schools, as well as post-collegiate track clubs. Cal Poly won the race with a team score of 48 (lowest score wins), followed by Cal Baptist with 97, and UC Santa Barbara with 105. Westmont placed 25th with a score of 650 and a team average time of 27:35. Finishing first for Westmont was freshman Danny Rubin, placing 82nd in a time of 25:56. He was followed by teammates Chris Hanessian in 152nd (27:34), Craig Odenwald in 168th (27:56), Patrick Malberg in 177th (28:09), and Thaddeus Kowalik who came in 179th (28:22) to complete the scoring.

With three of the team’s top five runners missing, the men did not perform as well as they wanted. “We are not satisfied with our performance, but we’re going to come back really strong,” said Hanessian.

The women started their season in the 5k open race against 15 other teams. Cal Coast Track Club won the race with a score of 24, followed by Utah Valley with 72, and Pomona-Pitzer with 77. The Warriors placed 14th with a score of 361 and a team time average of 20:17. Freshman Madden Hundley finished first for the Warriors with a time of 19:43. She was followed by teammates Sarah Claud in 108th (20:17), Callie Guthrie in 111th (20:20), Amanda Colacchia (20:35) in 123rd, and Macy Cholometes who rounded out the scoring in 132nd (20:45).

Overall, the women had a good performance with a team spread (time between the first and fifth runner) of around one minute. “We wanted to beat The Master’s and we came close,” said team co-captain Claud.

The Warriors resume action on Sept. 28 at The Master’s University Invitational in Santa Clarita.
